![]() ![]() I got all the 'safety' interlocks to work and the engine running. Turns out there were two problems:1 The drive belt coming off the engine was pretty worn and needed to be replaced.2 In the Variable Speed Pulley, the center floating 'flange' (can't think of a better name) was prevented in fully moving in one direction (High Speed) because some fibrous plant material had gotten wrapped around the shaft on which it slides and acted as a spacer.That mower goes so fast now, it is almost scary.Thanks to everyone for your inputs.Īn organization I volunteer for has an MTD Model 95184 14HP Riding Lawn Mower that I am trying to fix up. Here is the follow-up to the original question - finally got time to take the mower apart. Should be simple, you should be able to take the inspection plate off in front of the seat and see the belt and pulleys. A very good system.As stated might be the belt, V S pulley stuck in one position or linkage. I cut the grass on my property when it was 2' tall by going slow and taking half a cut.They use an idler pulley to change tension on the belt letting the VS pulley change size. I have a 12 1/2hp 38' MTD that I have had for 14 years. Probably less than 50 bucks in repairs to it, so far.Cheers,George. Needs a new front drive belt.Right that it is a variable speed pulley setup. I think that MTD is about the same as the Bolens I bought used for my kids, last year. I thought at first it was a hydrostatic, but is appears to something else. What type of transmission is in this thing. The problem I now have is the transmission is supposed to be a '7 speed shift on the go' (per the dacals), but maybe has three slow speeds - the other shift positions don't seem to be doing anything.
